Setting Up Your Corporation Choosing a Name

What is a Numbered Corporation?

Numbered corporations are automatically assigned a number by Alberta Corporate Registry. The legal element (Ltd., Inc., or Corp.) can be chosen by the incorporator. An example is “123456 Alberta Ltd.”

They are no different than named corporations in terms of legal effect and rights. However, in most cases, numbered corporations are not ideal for businesses with ongoing operations because the number is not useful for branding.

If you choose a numbered corporation, you can change the name later by filing Articles of Amendment, but this will cost an additional $250-$450 through our office.

We generally recommend named corporations over numbered ones. See our article on Named vs. Numbered Corporations for a detailed comparison.
